ATTENTION: New Jersey American Water Issues Warning of Bad Tasting, Discolored Water

UPDATE (12/20): Water samples tested from the Raritan system MEET the consumption standards set forth by state and federal regulations. NJAW is continuing their targeted flushing and sampling throughout the system. Updates will be provided on their Alerts page.

Alert originally published: December 19, 2024 @ 4:40pm

New Jersey American Water (NJAW) are advising customers in the Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Union counties that their water might be discolored and not taste normal.

“If your water is discolored, run the cold-water taps only, at the lowest level of the house for about 3 to 5 minutes until the water runs clear,” New Jersey American Water said in a statement notifying customers it is aware of the changes in the taste and color of their water.

As of December 19, at 11:30 am, NJAW are investigating, taking samples from the source water, at different points in the treatment system of the two water treatment plants that serve our region and at sites throughout the distribution system.

In a press release statement, NJAW advised that “while preliminary sampling results show water meets primary standards, we are continuing to sample throughout our system to monitor water quality.”
