Fire Safety Services Information

The mission of the Township of Raritan, Department of Fire Safety is to prevent and minimize the loss of life and property of the community residents and businesses through the delivery of the highest quality of efficient and effective code enforcement, public education and emergency response.

Our primary responsibility is enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and other local fire safety regulations to over 120 square miles of Hunterdon County including the Townships of Raritan, Readington and Kingwood.  Major activities within the scope of this office include: Commercial building inspections, Complaints, Permit Control, and Smoke Detector Inspections on re-sale. We also conduct Fire Safety Presentations for Schools, businesses, and other community groups; control of false alarms and fire zones; fire investigations to determine origin and cause; site plan reviews; youth firesetter interventions; and emergency response.

As one of the largest local enforcing agencies in the State, our on-call fire marshal staff provide coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to and investigate fires, illegal open burning, and provide additional requested support to fire departments in our coverage area. Our on-call staff are available after hours to investigate reports of life-threatening or dangerous situations involving fire code violations.

Our staff are certified by the State of New Jersey as fire inspectors, fire investigators, and firefighters. We work closely with our municipal, county, and state partners to ensure code compliance and provide technical assistance in the application, interpretation, and enforcement of codes and standards.
