Raritan Township Achieves Bronze Sustainable Jersey Certification

RARITAN TWP., N.J. (Hunterdon County) — The Township of Raritan received its bronze-level Sustainable Jersey recertification at the Sustainable Jersey Annual Luncheon during the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) Conference in Atlantic City, November 19. Raritan joins Sustainable Jersey's 466 participating communities – nearly 83% of the state's municipalities – that met the rigorous requirements to achieve Bronze.

Since Raritan’s first Bronze certification in 2011, the town has championed implementing solutions to crucial environmental challenges through its Green Team and Environmental Commission – from waste reduction and recycling to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and protecting natural resources.

“It is an honor to take time to recognize these impressive municipalities and the work they are doing to create a healthy environment for all,” said Randall Solomon, director of Sustainable Jersey. “From advancing energy efficiency to reducing waste and increasing climate resiliency, these towns have demonstrated their relentless commitment to creating a more sustainable future. We will continue to provide the tools, training and financial incentives they need to make progress.”

This year, Raritan is among 208 municipalities certified by Sustainable Jersey as one of their recognized towns that provided documentary evidence of their commitment to sustainability. Examples submitted include but are not limited to updated ordinances, programs, policies and procedures, and facility improvements.

According to Maureen Jones, program coordinator for Sustainable Jersey, Raritan Township has been certified previously in the 2014, 2017, 2022 and 2023 application cycles – all at the bronze designation.

To qualify for certification, applicants must complete a fixed number of objectives and are evaluated by subject matter experts on a point-based scale, with 150 points as the requisite to achieve Bronze status. For 2024, Raritan Township earned 250 points.

The next certification the Environmental Commission wants to achieve is a silver-level designation, which requires 350 points.
